Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is a beautiful ancient hillside town with a cavernous Eglise Monolithe carved out of the cliff face. At the lower levels the river beach provides ample car parking and a range of activities such as:

St Aulaye has slightly whiter sand, and possibly greater swimming opportunities with the river creating a couple of islands to swim around. Again providing excellent facilities such as:

Both beaches are suitable for the very young (with adequate supervision) to the very old and provide excellent facilities when the sun shines.
Further along the river in both directions are several other beaches, and if you have any experiences of them please let us know. There are also several other beaches within close proximity including at Parcoul, La Roche Chalais, north of Nontron, Brossac and particularly Grande Etang de la Jemaye (south of Riberac) which has numerous facilities including play ground, restaurants/ bars, lake etc.
Slightly further a field, Royan makes a fantastic day trip and is approximately 70 miles away. Set at the mouth of the Gironde, Royan has fantastic beaches and one of the best zoos in France. Along the beach there are several attractions including bike hire & cruises.
